Wood fences are our specialty. They have a natural beauty, and can be built in a wide variety of styles. If you like the weathered grey look, you will also have a maintenance-free fence. Staining or finishing to maintain the warm cedar look, or to alter the original color is optional, but not necessary, to prolong the life of your fence.
Almost all of our wood fences are built with WESTERN RED CEDAR from British Columbia, Oregon, Idaho and Washington State. We purchase the thickest and best boards, so that your fence will last 20 to 30 years. Cedar requires no upkeep and contains its own “ingredients” to prevent deterioration. Its cell structure is “closed” and naturally repels water. This is why cedar is much more stable than treated wood, which requires an “open” cell structure that accepts chemicals–hence it also accepts rain.
Wood fence, steel posts
We haven’t built residential fences with wood posts for decades. We’ve convinced industry leaders – and our customers – that this is the best way to guarantee strength and endurance. Steel posts do not crack, warp or rot, and are unaffected by string trimmers. We offer cedar covers, designed and built by our craftsmen, as an enhancement to conceal the steel posts.
All wood fences are custom-built on your property to fit the terrain. You can choose from a variety of standard styles including Center Board, Picket, QualBoard, Tom Sawyer, or your own Custom design. Within those styles you can choose from various board tops, grades of wood, and degree of openness.
Center Board Fence
Center Board privacy fences can be constructed with almost unlimited options. Spaced boards, width of boards, alternating width boards lattice etc. Since we build our lattice by hand you can choose from some of our already designed lattice, or we can make a lattice style just for you.
Picket Fence
What could be more American? A picket fence says “home:” tradition, safety and classic beauty. The “squared- off” top of this Fancy Gothic picket is less forbidding than a sharply pointed picket. See Picket Top diagram.
QualBoard Fence
Sometimes this is called the “good neighbor” fence because both sides look the same. When looking at an angle you will see some airspace, depending on how much the boards overlap. Wood fences provide complete or partial privacy depending on the boards’ width as well as the amount of space between boards. Our boards are thicker and wider than commonly used, creating a true sense of privacy. For example, a 1″ gap between 8″ boards give more privacy than a 1″ gap between 6″-wide boards.
Because we custom build wood fences on site, we can usually follow the flow of your terrain. This method eliminates the need to step sections, which is the norm when installing factory-built fences. Any fence that blocks a view also blocks the wind. It may seem surprising that a fence that provides 87% screening bears a 100% wind load, yet 50% screening creates an 87% wind load – not that much less! So your choice of the gap width won’t affect the wind load very much.
Split Rail Fence
This natural-looking fence consists of hand-split Western Red Cedar posts and rails, which weather to a silvery grey. Rustic split rail fences can define borders, create barriers and provide backgrounds for gardens, lawns and driveways.
Split rail fences are available in two- or three-rail styles. The rails are produced in 10′ lengths. It’s impossible to measure split cedar girth precisely. We use measurements that are more accurate than those commonly used to designate split rail sizes.
Historically, two persons randomly selected 10 rails, measured their circumference 18″ from each end, then averaged these 20 measurements. To make sure that the split rail we sell you meets these standards, we verify the number of rails in a standard forklift-size bundle:
u 140-150 rails indicate a 12″ circumference
u 110-120 rails indicate a 14″ circumference
Tom Sawyer Fence
There are two sides to every fence. Many communities require the “finished” side to face the neighbor. The other side (above) can be equally lovely or even preferable when professionally installed.
Named after Mark Twain’s character who got his friends to paint Aunt Polly’s fence, most Tom Sawyer fences are allowed to weather, as their primary purposes are screening and security.
Custom Wood Fence / Arbors & Pergolas
Do you want a very special, unique fence? We can build it for you. The only limit is your budget.
Many forces work against your fence: sun, rain, snow, frost, moving ground, wind, animals, vandals, even salt spray. Any fence that doesn’t stand straight and true in the face of these attacks will not look good regardless of how fancy it was.
Horizontal Board Fence
Looking for a fence that is little more unique than the standard vertical privacy fence? Why not go horizontal! With unlimited design options we can make the horizontal fence of your dreams.
